On another photo forum I occasionally hang out on, someone posted "What are your pet peeves in photography that you see other photographers do?", and boy was there a lot of responses of people gleefully putting others down. My feeling is that all that crappy photographers do is make my photos seem that much better in comparison. What peeves me is when I'm shooting someplace with someone else, and they get much better photos than I do.

What I think is a much more productive question to discuss, is what you are doing, or have you done, to improve your own photography? Are you practicing hand held shots at low shutter speeds? Taking test shots without using the light meter to get a feel for what light gives what exposures? Spending a month shooting with only one prime lens at a time? Posting PESOs to be ridiculed by the gang on PDML?

I hadn't really thought of it as working to improve my photography, but I hope it ends up having that effect. I have been shooting almost exclusively with my 50/1.4 for months now, and I do practice shooting hand-held at slow speeds -- though, that's largely a matter of convenience since I despise carrying around a tripod -- or any other gear beyond a camera and a lens or two.

I just feel that I get better results that way, though I can't say whether it's a matter of my photography getting better, or just that I love the results the 50/1.4 produces. I do think my work has improved technically since I first joined PDML -- and I'm sure that has a lot to do with practice. But, I think the exposure to the work of others in the group has every bit as much to do with any improvement I might have made over the past year.
