Yes it works.  I have a SMC Tak 50 1.4 that was badly yellow.  The
recommended procedure is to wrap it in aluminium foil (leaving the front
element exposed) and put the lens in direct sunlight.  I put mine under
a clear glass jar out in the open and the yellowing cleared in about 2
weeks.

The aluminium foil is supposed to reflect sunlight around inside the
lens.
