I haven't any actual experience with either lens, but I can tell you that I've heard the the DA is better than the FA at all focal lengths that they share and at the short end all of those that they don't.

Can anyone make comparisons in the performance between the DA 55-300 and the FA 80-320?

Sorry, I forgot to answer you question about my feelings re the DA 55~300. I "almost" feel guilty when I see the images and remember how much the DA cost at B&H.. ($350). I recommended it to my older brother (the one who used to prove over and over that he was older and bigger and could beat me up...or maybe I was a slow learner) who has told me he bought one and loves it. It has the expected "consumer" operation, weight and feel and, as you may know, is a screw drive AF.

Highly Recommended!

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
