It rains quite often up there.  And snows during winter, too.

You weren't allowed to tow anything on that old road.  Now with the viaduct 
you're allowed towing unless the weather conditions are unsuitable.

Nearest alternative is Lewis Pass a little to the north.  The terrain there is 
easier but no less spectacular.
