As a footnote to this discussion, I should note that when I went to do a 100% comparison, I found that the shot with flash fill is a bit out of focus, while the other is not. That explains the muted detail in the flash pic, but I do see some lost highlights in the center of the bird's beast as well. I guess my eyes aren't what they used to be. Have to remember to look at 100% before I render. But this discussion was revealing for me. I'm going to moderate my use of flash next time out.
