In my experience, most criminals are stupid. Really stupid.

Lest you think the story you posted is unique, let me tell you a real life
story of criminal masterminds at work:

A fellow heard of a trailer load of silver bullion that would be delivered and
stored in a yard somewhere in an industrial park in Greater Toronto. Just drive
a truck into that yard, hitch up to the trailer and drive out a rich man. Value
on the black market: a cool half-million.

But they needed help and each new guy would get an equal share of this
limitless loot. They paid off a security guard, a guy to drive the
semi-tractor, a guy to steal the tractor, someone to paint the stolen vehicle,
which as it turned out needed considerable repairs (and another miscreant who
required a share). By the end there were a dozen involved. And the shipment was
delayed - by over a year. In the meanwhile the bottom dropped out of the silver
market and the best their truckload would fetch on the black market was
$65,000. For a year's work. Split 12 ways.

They'd have made more working part time at a fast food joint.

Even better: the cops were on to them early and just sat back, rubbing their
hands with glee as the ring got larger and larger. They were all arrested and
pleaded out to about a year of pre-trial time served.

Cheers,
frank
