Several years ago, a nearby Sheriffs Departments made a large marijuana bust.
So much so, that they parked a borrowed, surplus Army 5-ton truck behind their
building filled with the evidence. When the case came to trial, the evidence
was mostly missing.

The subsequent investigation revealed a large number of other inadequacies in
the department.

Lacking an incinerator suitable for the purpose, the majority of the marijuana was simply
buried in a local landfill. When the burial site was re-checked after they discovered the
"evidence" in the back of the truck had gone missing, that marijuana was also
missing.
You can't keep an pothead from his stash, man. Just not done.
Yeah, but it's just disheartening when the cops are even dumber than the dopers.

Ya wanna think like a doper, ya gotta be like a doper. Both sides played out as
they were intended!
Dumb? Wanna bet that the cops who buried the stash are the ones who went back
and dug it up?

No, it was not. It wasn't corruption, just stupidity. That sheriff's department was straight, but they were dumber than a box of rocks.

The Sheriff retired before the next election. He didn't even run in the primary. Sheriff is an elected political office in NC. The Sheriff himself doesn't have to be a trained police officer, only the deputies who work for him do.

The STATE police, FBI and DEA all investigated and cleared the department of criminal complicity. They couldn't, and didn't try to, clear them of being STUPID.

They had a pretty good idea who *DID* dig it up, but by then they couldn't find the *evidence* they needed to prosecute them.
