You didn't by any chance bracket your exposure? This is exactly the sort of situation that I always bracket in case I ever get off my butt and learn to use HDR software.
HDR just to expand the dynamic range would do wonders for bringing out the details in both the shadow and the highlights in the water.
I also think that the subject would lend itself to over the top HDR, tone mapping, saturation and vibrance. It's already halfway to looking like something out of someone's acid trip, and it might be fun to bring it the rest of the way.
