This being an off topic subject, I'd be perfectly happy to get responses off
the list. It's also quite possible that there are other people in a similar
situation, who are also interested in what people have to say.

When I got my first generation moto droid, it was just about everything I
wanted in a PDA since I got my first palm pilot. I love having a hard keypad, I
can get email anyplace, and the things it does with the GPS provide endless
"holy shit! this is the 21st Century!" moments.

However, performance on it seems to be dropping in a manner that implies the
software bloat that goes along with ever more powerful hardware. Bugs and
crashes have been increasing in a manner consistent with running software
optimized for new hardware, on obsolete hardware. Call quality is mixed,
sometimes it seems pretty good, but some people have trouble understanding what
I'm saying. (you can take the obvious jokes as given). The camera is a piece of
shite. I don't buy a phone for the camera, but there are times when it is handy
to have. The list goes on. The phone works, there's nothing about it that is
so bad that I can't put up with it, but it's got enough little issues that I
could easily be tempted by "the new shiny".

The Droid 3 looks like it has a lot of nice features. Unfortunately it's just
enough bigger than mine that I would no longer be able to use the mounts I have
for my car and bicycle.

One possible solution would be to root my phone and install cynaogenmod. It's
supposed to improve a lot of the issues, and could be a fun experiment.
However, it could end up being a pain in the ass series of little issues, each
of which takes longer than it should to fix. It is quite possible that this
will be plan A, but I don't want to start on this without having a plan B that
involves heading down to Verizon with a shopping list.

Specs:
Android OS. I tried to like the iPhone, but I couldn't. I want something that
I can hack on, and if I do, I want those skills to be marketable.

Verizon: Verizon is evil, but where I use my phone, their infrastructure works
the best.

Wants:

I prefer access to a physical keyboard. It's not a requirement, the virtual
keyboards are supposed to be getting much better.

A screen good enough to show off some of my photos would be handy.

tethering

A decent external keyboard would be nice.

Current primary uses:

1) Email
2) Phone
3) GPS / search
