I started Android development this summer. My phone is on AT&T -- HTC Inspire. v. 2.31. Battery life is mediocre.
Stay away from the $79 tablets. They os v. 1.5 and cannot run many apps. I've not tried a bluetooth kb with it yet. No idea if it would work or not. The touch screen is OK, but the Targus Stylus should be strongly considered. At least development is free. Eclipse is easy to use. Oddly, though, the emulator is slower to use than a real phone. There is plenty of online development material out there. Dialog boxes are not modal. You'll have to programm around the issue. Not hard, but important to be aware of. The Timer does not always die properly. Pay close attention to return values and assume nothing. IOW, there is some immaturity in the OS, but it is "good" and you'll enjoy it.
