It would be better but it can work without switching it off. But a lightbox is
much to dark, you will need a much brighter light.

I was so dumb ;-) and put a switch in ... but it did not work. This
scanner used the light to calibrate itself.

There is a workaround with a "mirror box" like a prisma ! 
I tried it and you will be able to scan. But it is a horror to put the
mirror box at the "right place" on the scanner. A bit of and you get
big color shifts !
