I hate it when a 10 minute, $10 repair job expands by a couple
orders of magnitude, in both dimensions.
if that's how much you'll pay, consider a tankless; we're extremely
happy with our Rinnai; we have it mounted outside the house, so no
exhaust pipe needed
I thought about one of those a while back. The problem is that our
power goes out far more frequently than ideal, and the tankless
heaters don't work without power.
I think they make tankless gas water heaters.
They make tankless gas water heaters, but they require house current to
run the ignitor. In theory, I could set up a UPS for the water heater.
But, I'll stick with what I have for now.
I'm absolutely stunned, the new water heater went in, almost without a
hitch. I expected the job to take all day, and Ray did it in less than
two hours.
If you've got natural gas to your house, I don't think you can beat a
gas fired water heater. Between winter ice storms & hurricanes, I've had
power outages around here that lasted from a week to a month, and I've
never been without hot water.
