for whole-house capacities, at least in Colorado, gas units are much more common because electric models require 120 amps or more to heat 2 gpm instantaneously from 32 to 120 degrees F; that can make the wiring more expensive than the heater; gas is also cheaper per BTU at the moment; however electric units are more efficient, simpler, and cost less than gas units
my gas water heater is outside the house; it uses electricity for ignition and a frost-protecting features (79 and 100 watts respectively; 2 watts standby); power here is quite reliable, but i use a UPS to avoid freezing the heater during an inopportune blackout; we chose tankless in part because it freed up a closet in a critical part of our not-so-large house; the subjective value of the closet by itself outweighs the cost of the heater
