I have to admit that I'm not really up on the best way to use the new-fangled flashes of today. Before my long hiatus from photography I used simple Vivitar 285s and Metz potato mashers with Mamiya TLRs (all waaaay pre-TTL/PTTL stuff). That being said, when I shopped for a flash for my DSLR, I didn't want to have ANY regrets.
I got the Metz 58 AF-1 for Pentax http://www.amazon.com/Metz-mecablitz-AF-1-digital-Pentax/dp/B00117DYVI as its specs were superior to anything Pentax-branded and Metz has a great reputation. I've been very pleased with it, but I know I haven't yet figured out how to use it to its full potential.
