Quoting Bob Sullivan <[email protected]>:
Darren,
Once upon a time long ago, I met an undergraduate studying industrial
design at another local university. I asked what he was working on
and he said race cars. So having some technical background, I asked
about what he was doing - aerodynamics, engines, suspensions, ... He
waved me off with 'Oh no, nothing like that. I'm designing how they
should look.' That's when I decided industrial design was a crock of
shit. Over the intervening 40 years, I have softened that opinion a
little bit, but I still think these people are pompous asses who are
more into self promotion than adding value to a product.
While I agree with you, the aim is probably to get the product noticed
and a product that's associated with one of the pompous asses is more
likely to be noticed than one that isn't.
That's the theory anyway. Whether it turns out to be a good thing in
the case of the new camera remains to be seen....
Cheers
Brian

I don't remember if this was linked in our previous K-01 rumors
discussion, but here is a nice complete article about the designer:

While we are at it, I think it is worth remembering other designers
who had a hand in some distinctive cameras of yesteryear:
Walter Teague
http://www.browniecamera.nl/walter_dorwin_teague.htm
Raymond Loewy, who designed a lot of iconic stuff
http://www.oobject.com/category/12-classic-raymond-loewy-designs/
also designed the Anscoflex (and Anscoflex II)

Also interesting is this newspaper ad which falsely states
"streamlined design by Raymond Loewy"
http://timirving.blogspot.com/2010/05/purma-cameras-raymond-loewy.html
when instead its shape was designed by the brilliant poster artist
Tom Purves:

And we shouldn't forget one who has been called the "first superstar
of camera design",
Yoshihisa Maitani, who was responsible for the designs of arguably
three of the most important japanese camera designs: Olympus OM-1, the
Olympus Pen-F, and the Olympus XA

Newton, the designer consulted on the K-01, is a good friend of Apple
design chief, Jonathan Ive, and no one can argue against his role in
the success of Apple products (although it would have been Steve Jobs
giving the thumbs up or thumbs down to his design ideas).
I think there may be good reason to feel some eager anticipation with
what this designer has wrought in cooperation with Pentax.
