With my camera, my problem was very intermittent. I don't think that you're likely to do any damage. I'd try it with the battery again. Then put a fresh topping off charge on the battery and try it yet again. I suspect there's a good chance that the problem was caused, and cured, by taking the battery out, not by which battery. It could also be related to the temperature on the circuit board, in which case having left the camera off for hours would fix it. If it's an intermittent problem, it's good to know how to cause it, so that they can make sure that they did indeed fix it.
