Fliker has been giving me a bit of trouble --
I saw the first one.. the close-up but not the others...
just came back to this now..
this is the turtle shot I think I like best.. but for some reason it was
difficult to get from one to the other

Shooting with a compact camera without a viewfinder is always tricky
for me, but doing it underwater, with big clunky buttons that don't
always click as quickly as you want them to was a challenge for me.
Basically, I held the camera out at arm's length, pointed it at the
turtles, and clicked two or three times, hoping something would make
it to the sensor.

No, I did not crop this image. This large green sea turtle rose up
from underneath me while I was snorkeling, and really was that close.

After snorkeling on Molokini, a tiny semi-submerged volcanic crater
off the West coast of Maui, we went to a reef known for many turtles.
There were dozens who surfaced over a period of about 30 minutes. I
was able to swim up and behind several of them and obtain a few
images, using a Sea Life underwater compact digital camera. My
gallery of turtle photos from that dive are here:

I have played with these enormous creatures on the beaches of Oman near Sur.
They come inland at night in hordes for laying eggs. And the eggs are
very rubbery, soft, round and a bit larger than a pin pong ball. No
photos though as flash is not allowed. They try to wade back back into
the ocean before day break, but they become so weak that we had to
push many of them back into the sea. They are a sight to behold in the
moonlight - better than the seven wonders of the world.
