In at least some U.S. states you can now get an "enhanced" drivers license 
which you can use in lieu of a passport for crossings to/from Canada, Mexico, 
and IIRC some portions of the Caribbean. I've tried it, it works. Maybe they 
have a similar Canadian offering?
