I remember when you could do that with a short form birth certificate
and a regular old drivers license from pretty much anywhere in the US,
and they didn't have pictures on the licenses. But I'm old and I
remember when both Canada and the US were more or less free countries.

In at least some U.S. states you can now get an "enhanced" drivers license
which you can use in lieu of a passport for crossings to/from Canada, Mexico, and IIRC
some portions of the Caribbean. I've tried it, it works. Maybe they have a similar
Canadian offering?

I haven't crossed the border for years. My last time was likely around 5 or 6
years ago. Don't know how much more difficult it may be now, but as I no longer
have a passport I'm not even trying.
Anyway, as others have said, it can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes short and easy,
other times long and arduous. And that's going both ways.
I think much of it has to do with the border guard lottery. These guys have a
lot if discretion. If they're in a good mood you're in like flint. If they're
having a bad day or maybe they're only checking 1 out of 3 and you're number
two, you're okay. Smaller crossing stations in the dead of the night tend to
work well. Larger ones on a holiday weekend, forget about it. Try getting from
Buffalo to Fort Erie on the afternoon of a holiday Monday - I have. No fun.
This guy just had a bad draw is all.
Having no fixed address didn't help his chances either.

Interesting post by David duChemin on his PixelatedImage blog.

It seems that the US has finally understood the threat posed by those
from the north....

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
