Damn, the separate tone curves on separate channels is *exactly* what I need for a bunch of my photos, it looks like it has at least one "must have" feature for me.
i've been using that in Aperture for quite a while; it was one of the things that surprised me was not already in LR, watching the video Godfrey linked to, though i think she cherry-picked the image she used, because in many photos notching the curve for one channel will affect more than just what you want to change
i am pretty sure LR is ahead of Aperture now in general exposure control though, that's what i most look forward to i LR
