yeah, they are license upgrades, not software upgrades; many professionals want the multiple versions installed for exactly the version compatibility issues you mentioned, but you can certainly uninstall previous versions; note that it took 5 weeks for me to get such a free upgrade (for Lightroom)
and as i noted elsewhere, for those with any CS2 or later individual product license, $30/month will get you a year's subscription to CS-everything; that's what i'm planning to do; it's $50/month after that
