The Slik Pro 700 DX  carbon fiber tripod at about $250 gets you a lot of tripod 
for your money. With the relatively long lenses you're talking about, I would 
definitely avoid ball heads and go with a good, sturdy three-way head like the 
Bogen 8047. That head is almost half the weight of the tripod, but you can 
really lock it down. If you can spend more, consider one of the stout Feisol 
tripods, like the 3372 Rapid.
