If & when I want to donate toa specific charity, I give directly to the
charity and cut out the middle man.

What many don't realize is that these street corner charity hustlers
are not employed by the charities they solicit funds for. The charities
"subcontract" the work out to professional fundraising companies.
One can't imagine that much of the monies raised is left for actual
charitable work once these fundraising companies are done with it; then
there's the overhead and costs of the charities themselves.
I work for one of the INGOs that hire these agencies. They're bringing in
money that the charities wouldn't otherwise have received, so it's a net
gain even though they have to pay the agencies. It would cost more for the
charities to hire people to do the collecting, and there aren't enough
volunteers.
The collectors are usually young people who make the mistake of targetting
other young people. But young people often don't have much money, so they
tend to cancel their payments quite quickly after they've started. If they
can sign up middle-aged people, who forget about the donations or are just
too lazy to cancel them, then they get much more overall, and the cost of
the agencies is amortized over a longer period. Older people are also more
likely to increase their donations when they get the inevitable follow-up
phone calls.
