I'm inclined to suggest other lenses, other types of lenses (do you have any 
"M" lenses?), and trying it on your other body (do you still have the K10?  The 
ist-D?  Any film bodies?)

Yeah, there's a lever widget that is buried you can't see moving.

So, it seems as if the extension tube is connecting properly to the lens, it's 
just a question on the body side.
