I final note…the guys on the LUG told me that I should have been using Transcend cards (which were the cheapest SD cards at BHPhoto at the time). I bought some. They didn't work in the Leica, nor did they work more than a few weeks in the Pentax. I think they are considered to be one-use cards, like Depends undergarments.
anecdotal evidence on this type of product is worth about as much as those Depends; i've used Transcend, ADATA and now Team — cheapo brands — without problems; if i have problems, how could i possibly know it is the brand's fault?
unless there are subsidiary arrangements i don't know of it seems like Samsung is the only company actually manufacturing NAND flash chips and controllers and selling SD cards; the reset are labeling and distribution companies; there may be variations, but all the effort at building brand loyalty seems a bit of a farce to me
