Certainly not.  

My first step is to sort them into directories, photos of musicians, portland, 
fireworks, visiting mom etc.

My goal wasn't to edit them all at once, it's just that I have a stupid large 
number, even by my standards, to go through.

That should work a lot better than loading each on in turn, which takes far 
more than a second or two per frame.
