The first shot, without endangered fingers, is best anyway ...

I cautioned someone once who was feeding Union Square park squirrels offering tidbits with bare fingers, and not even flat-handed and was told angrily that squirrels don't get rabies and to mind my own business.

All mammals can carry rabies even if they don't show symptoms. I'm pretty sure squirrels show symptoms and die of it. Have you noticed that a lot of people think that nature is a Disney movie? Actually that's not fair, Disney movies show nature a lot closer to reality than that.

I remember my dad telling us kids 'DONT FEED THE SQUIRRELS'.
One day, as a grandpa, he showed up with a deep cut in the pad of his
index finger.
I asked about it and my mom eventually told me.
He was feeding a squirrel on the kitchen window ledge by hand.
It was a simple swipe with a claw.

Nice images, but it is quite unwise to stick one's fingers that close

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthly search.
