as I said in the original message "I despise iPhoto". Seriously. When I first tried it, my impression was that it was the one of the worst pieces of software that I had ever used. Plus, it has the disadvantage, that I've mentioned I want to avoid, of having to import every picture into it to display them. Preview almost does what I want, but it isnt' configurable, and you can't just point it at a directory tree, you have to select all the photos in the directory.
