While I got many recommendations, both here and when I asked on facebook, nobody actually mentioned any program that seemed to meet all of my requirements.
i think iPhoto met all of your requirements except you required it not be iPhoto; anything that did all you wanted would probably have taken more time than you had to set up; the things you ran into with iPhoto, in my limited experience, are pretty controllable
I don't tend to spend a lot of time looking at my own photos,
i don't either …
As such the vast majority of photos in the slideshow were ones that I hadn't looked at for a while. As such it was interesting to look at a bunch of my work with a relatively fresh eye and was pleasantly surprising to see quite a few that I actually liked.
here's how i force myself to review my photos: i have Aperture sets that sync with my phone — "1 star plus in the last 2 weeks", and "2 stars plus in the last 4 months" — these in effect put a rotation of photos i've liked at first glance onto my phone; i can start the 2 star set and hand it to a friend who wants to see what i photograph, or i can press a button on my phone and put the photos on my TV then quickly flip through to find photos relevant to something we're talking about; this at least gives me a chance to ponder whether my star ratings make sense
