that's true if your only copy of a file is in the cloud (in which case i'd suggest three providers), but with Dropbox (and unlike Box and many others), you also have a local copy on as many machines as you have, of which you can (and should) make ordinary backups

i think if you need to count on cloud storage you should probably pay for it; my low-end hosting account at Dreamhost includes 50GB of file storage with no extra fees; i can buy more at the same rate as Dropbox Pro, but billed in GB increments

many other services (e.g. Amazon S3) are available for varying but reasonable costs, but the convenience varies also — i find Dropbox extremely convenient for sharing with others and across my devices, and that's what i need the most
