available scanner resolution and film grain size, I'm pretty sure that
pixels have met and exceeded film for resolution.
My experiences with scanning 35mm negatives at 4000 dpi lead me to
believe that a 4000 dpi pixel and an average film grain are of
approximately the same size (same order of magnitude). However, the
pixels are arranged in a grid, while the grains appear stochastically in
the emulsion.
