Apropos of B&W conversions and "pop": I spent a while playing around with the Nik filter Silver Efex pro 2 yesterday and I could right away see that this software is Good Stuff. Easy to add midtone contrast, improve micro contrast using the Structure slider, and just generally do a great job of improving monochrome images.
It's available for free (as discussed in a thread from a week ago *) through a German magazine promotion, which as someone pointed out likely means that Silver Efex Pro 3 is on its way, but it's well worth getting and trying.
