I don't use the Astrotracer (yet), but often use the GPS for geo-tagging, and 
simple-navigation .
It lets you easily navigate to the location of a previously taken photo (like 
one from your car :-).

Getting to that menu is cumbersome though, so allowing it to be assigned to the 
RAW/Fx button is great!
(FYI, in this mode of usage it works if the GPS unit is ON, does nothing 
otherwise)

A simple press of the RAW button now shows direction and distance to my 
reference photo location ...
