Even though the K500 is a relatively simple design, it's possible that
the lens took enough of a bang in the past to make it less sharp, I say
this because even cheap 500mm long lenses from that era were acceptably
sharp when stopped down a stop or two.

Honestly, it's probably just soft. I've done lots of tripod shooting
with it, and it doesn't even start to look sharp until f11, and even
then I have to add a ton of sharpening in Photoshop to make the images
look halfway decent. I just thought, well, *maybe* the glass just
needs a cleaning. It is an old lens, after all, and was in some guy's
closet for more than a decade before it came to me.
You could get it cleaned, but you'll still end up with a big/heavy lens.
