Honestly, I think it's a really apt comparison.
My first new DSLR was a K-x for much the same reason that I would love a
WRX STi to be my first new sports car.
I now return to my obligatory scorn for automotive-photographic analogies.

and owned a 3rd, 21 years ago.
As well as having products that fill a niche (a niche that enough
people care about is key), marketing and advertising appears to play a
large role in their success.
If Ricoh Pentax could learn from the strategy...
