Speaking as one with a small, finite photography budget: MY current
BRAND must be PENTAX because I'm fiscally invested in it and it makes
the most economic sense to continue to buy additional gear for Pentax.
I might have started out with a Nikon body in which case I'd be
fiscally invested in that instead--same outcome.

Personally I still think I acted wisely buying into Pentax, and not
because of any possible name prestige, but purely because I get the
most bang for the buck with it. I could not have afforded a Canon 5D
Mk II plus their fast 2.8 zooms equivalent to the Pentax 16-50 and
50-135. But I get close enough to that level of performance in my
Pentax gear (in what I shoot) that I'm happy, and I could afford
*that*.
