but if it's not possible or practical it shouldn't be
dismissed so lightly.

Then you bought the wrong size tripod.

Or, you bought the size tripod that fits in your bag, or that you can carry with you.


I'd never do that as the tripods end purpose has nothing to do with fitting a bag - IMO.

A while back I found myself with more than one tripod and bit the bullet, got rid of them all and bought a Gitzo that was not only rated to carry my 600mm, but also weighted less than any of the tripods I got rid of. OBTW its tall enough for me - I'm 6'4" - that when fully extended I don't have to stoop & it has no center column.

I admit it was an expensive tripod, being Carbon fibre but its been well worth the cost.
