So, where did this “primes only” idea come from?

I have never, ever read or heard anyone suggest such an absurd thing. In fact, the only person I can imagine saying anything like that would be someone with a cabinet full of prime lenses for sale.

And I say this as someone who unabashedly uses a 70-300 Promaster lens very regularly.
