I didn't really use it much below water. I bought it because I
sometimes do some outdoor work in whatever the weather
conditions are and need to take pictures of sites. A waterproof
camera seemed like a good idea and the Canon was by far the
cheapest option.

When I did play with it in swimming pools, I found that most of
the shots were grossly overexposed by the flash....

Now I have a Zoom 90 WR, which has its own faults but produces
excellent pictures most of the time. I suspect it will fail
before the A1, though.

BTW, for those who were discussing "proper" snorkelling cameras,
there is a UK (?) producer called Sea & Sea who make a few
models with attachable strobes. They are considerably cheaper
than Nikonos' and are seen secondhand reasonably often. It may
be a rebrand of the Reefmaster.

One of these was lost by a diver in the English channel. It was
found about 9 months later in Scotland and the diver was traced
from the photgraphs on the processed film.

Let me chime in - while I have time...

I have used the Nikonos V for a couple of years diving. To be
really pleased with it you will need a strobe. Therefore many people are
better off getting a Reefmaster or Sea&Sea for a smaller less expensive
package. For snorkelling, it would also be better because of weight. The
Nikonos package's weight is not as noticeable underwater (diving). I have
been very happy with the results. It takes some gettting used to setting
the focussing distance by estimation. But I do enjoy setting the camera
manually either using its meter or my Sekonic in a housing. The only
limitation above water is realizing the lens being used and framing
accordingly. I have not been unhappy with the shots taken on land.

I have also used the Nikonos IV-A. Look for the V. I keep the IV-A
for collecting (?) purposes. It goes well with the I and II that I have.
Reminds me that I need to find the III to complete the collection.

                Hope this helps,
