There are trails in the crater:

I have never hiked in the Haleakala crater, but I did a hike across
one of the craters of Kilauea on the Big Island some years back.  A
memorable experience.  Now, at my age, I prefer the trails at
Haleakala National Park that go through forests inhabited by native
Hawaiian birds.
