I read a while back that Haleakala'a was used awhile back by NASA as a
practce site for Moon missions.

I never thought of it that way, but it is certainly arid and almost
completely devoid of life. There are tiny insects and some plants,
including the fabled Silversword, that live up here at 10,000 feet
above the Pacific.
