You prompted me to do a bit of Hawaiian research. My mental image of Hawaii
is beaches & big waves! I had no idea the volcanoes were so high - Haleakala
is over 5 miles above the seabed. It is interesting that so little rain
falls at those high altitudes - the peaks must mostly be above the clouds.
The scene you photographed could easily be a moonscape. Then there is the
amazing Silversword you mentioned which had to be saved from extinction.

I never thought of it that way, but it is certainly arid and almost
completely devoid of life. There are tiny insects and some plants,
including the fabled Silversword, that live up here at 10,000 feet
above the Pacific.
