We have been recommended to go further East to Valley of Fire and on to Zion, and then go East, around to the South side Grand Canyon before turning back to California. Suddenly we found ourselves doing in excess of 3000 kilometers in three weeks... Is that at all realistic? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
Yes it is, if you are willing to drive 5 or 6 hours a day for most of the days ... I did several of such 2 to 4 week roadtrips in that area, mostly on my own, and often in that same time of year, with the longest being just over 5000 kilometers in 4 weeks. > >Also, I'd love it if you have suggestions for places to stop by along the way. >:-) Saw lots of good tips from other already, but two things I might add: - Bodie, an old gold-mining (semi) ghosttown a little north of Lee-Vining and Mono-lake. It is just a 50 kilometer drive from Lee-Vining, north on 395 with the last few being unpaved gravel mainly (Highway 395 southward, and then crossing through Death Valley eastward is real nice too :-) - Near Page, Arizona (for the Antelope slot-canyon) there is also an old ghosttown 'Pahrea' some 40 miles to the west and just north from highway 89 that has also been used as a filmset. It is quite near the 'wave' rock formation as wel (in the same Paria canyon) which is south of US89. Just a few building remains, but nice scenery ...
