Ugh! Just ordered a new modem to replace the modem they discontinued
in 2006. Hopefully, this will help. Internet speed has been acting
up lately--insanely slow download times. In the mean time here's a
question.

I'm very reluctant to order cable for internet because of the costs.
For example, you can get a Comcast special offer for 6 months but
then your rates go up. I don't want all the cable TV stations etc.
Darrel & I aren't interested in tv that much, and I don't want a "tv
bill" as it were. Anyone in the Chicago area use AT&T's internet
services?

Any other options I should consider besides satellite internet etc?

Thanks in advance. Christine

I had ADSL from BellSouth before AT&T bought them out. It was faster
than dial-up.

The service was reasonably good whenever it was working. Which,
fortunately, it was most of the time. Because when there was a problem,
tech support took clueless script reading to entirely new level of
incompetence.

Their up-time was somewhat better than what I'm seeing with Time-Warner.
Time-Warner seems to have dead periods almost every day lasting anywhere
from a minute to half an hour. When BellSouth ADSL went out it usually
took a couple of days for them to get back up.

Plus, it would knock out my regular phone. I never had any problems with
my regular phone before I got ADSL (other than the time a drunk took out
a telephone pole up the street & they had that back up the same day).

I have Time-Warner Roadrunner cable internet without Cable TV. It's
something like $60 a month. There was a one year half off introductory
offer. I just planned on full price from the beginning & wasn't shocked
when the monthly rate went up at the end of the first year. Cost has
remained stable since then.
