Ugh! Just ordered a new modem to replace the modem they discontinued in 2006.
Hopefully, this will help. Internet speed has been acting up lately--insanely
slow download times. In the mean time here's a question.
I'm very reluctant to order cable for internet because of the costs. For example, you can get a
Comcast special offer for 6 months but then your rates go up. I don't want all the cable TV
stations etc. Darrel & I aren't interested in tv that much, and I don't want a "tv
bill" as it were. Anyone in the Chicago area use AT&T's internet services?
Any other options I should consider besides satellite internet etc?
i would be surprised if there is not a good local ISP that can run over your
existing DSL line and possibly improve your service and reduce your megacorpse
involvement; a good resource to find out is dslreports.com
i am loathe to use a cable provider, as they pool everyone nearby such that
throughput can vary tremendously, and from my neighbor's experiences, their
customer service is worse that CenturyLink's
it sounds like you are on DSL; is it possible you are on an old, all-copper
connection to the central office, and that your neighborhood drops are in the
process of being converted to fiber? if that's the case there is an
interference problem that may be occurring, and when it happened to me at first
it resulted in speed changes every few days; Qwest (now CenturyLink) wouldn't
tell me about it over the phone, but when i prodded the techs that came out
more than one explained it; the fiber is supposedly a good product, but not
available to me as i rent just the connection from CenturyLink and use a local
ISP; as a result i am stuck with 45-72KB/s unless i want to switch ISPs, but i
do get a credit every month for reduced throughput
