Yes, it may be a matter of taste, or monitor adjustment, or both. I must admit, though, that I find it hard to judge how much tonal adjustment exactly ought to be applied. Some of it is always needed, as "raw" b&w film scans definitely look flat, at least with my scanner.

You may wish to note that these shots are essentially uncropped; I've trimmed the images 
every so slightly where the scanner left skewed or jagged edges, but that's it. So, they 
may say something about the "full-frame" performance of the lens, although what 
I've done is nowhere near a scientific test.
