It turns out that the way Ricoh GXR EVF is constructed - the 90 deg swivel feature (that it also has) is in fact is Achilles heal. The contacts become flaky...
I hope that modern swivel designs don't have this problem. At least with Ricoh the EVF is detachable and can be replaced if necessary. OTOH, under convenient lighting conditions, I can easily shoot from the back LCD.
