Courtesy of eBay, I have a new/used tripod in the mail on the way to me. a Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon Fiber 3 Section Tripod which IIRC was highly recommended by Paul Stenquist a month or two ago. Others which looked attractive to me (eBay auctions ending within the next hour, but similar readily available) are the Giottos MT 8250B 4-section carbon fiber and the Gitzo 1325. After my field experience during the workshop I took, I really really wanted a better tripod, with the following in mind: carbon fiber for weight and stability, tall enough that I don't have to stoop too much nor use the center-post extension, ability to spread the legs wide for low-level shots, a hook to hang a weight for additional stability, good leg lock/unlock mechanism, and short enough to be manageable. I gave up on the idea of fitting into a 22' suitcase; I'll just travel with a larger suitcase or figure another method of transport.
