I don't remember who makes it or if it's even still made, but there used
to be a good sturdy tripod on the market that one of legs could be
removed & used as a mono-pod.

depends on the sort of "travel" your travel is, but I think it is
worth asking whether you need a tripod at all, or rather might get
away with a monopod. Monopods are much easier to carry, lightweight
and can even serve as a walking stick on hikes. A quick release plate
on the camera and receptor on the monopod makes converting it to use
much quicker and easier than a full-fledged tripod. I used mine on a
recent day hike around the zoo and found it perfect for giving me
enough steadiness to drop a couple of EVs of shutter speed when
needed, even at 500mm.
I also have a cheap Velbon DF mini which is lightweight and more of a
tabletop tripod, but perfect for those times you need to put the
camera on a tripod for a self-timer selfie (or group with everybody
including YOU in the picture). It would make a decent backpacking
tripod, if you didn't mind the low camera angles or else you set it up
on something higher.
My main tripod is a Manfrotto 3021BPro, which is the model before the
current models, but a well-regarded tripod. I would like it a lot,
even if I hadn't found it at at thrift store for $7.50. Still in the
market for a Real ballhead for it and trying to decide between Really
Right Stuff and Acratech, at the moment.
