Godfrey, I'm very glad to hear that you have a good reliable copy of this flash. Function-wise they are fine.
David Hobby (The Strobist) is a well respected hotshoe flash expert and is not known for steering his legions of fans wrong. You can be sure that he has one or more of these flashes and most likely gave them a very good workout, possibly including disassembly. If he says they're unreliable reproductions of the classic flash I don't think he just pulled that from thin air. But I don't have one myself, so I'm just passing along advice that I trust, but haven't personally verified. It's worth just what you paid for it; possibly less. :-) In any event, the Yongnuo is a modern design, has way more functionality including a builtin wireless receiver, for the same amount of money as a 385HV which is based on 1990's design.
